The Greek National Bioethics Commission (Εθνική Επιτροπή Βιοηθικής, Athens) has nine members representing a wide spread field of sciences. Example given; biology, medicine, sociology, theology, surgery, genetics, philosophy. The Commission discus subjects as transmissible infectious disease: public interest and autonomy, consent in the patient-physician relationship, guiding research ethics committees for biological research, genetic data in private insurance and prenatal and pre-implantation diagnosis.

The Irish Council for Bioethics, Dublin) established in 2002 as an independent, autonomous body to consider the ethical issues raised by developments in science and medicine, is in 2010 dissolved. The Government decided to discontinue funding the operation of ICB.

Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board/ Bioteknologinemndas
The Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board (Bioteknologinemndas, Oslo) is an independent organisation. The members (21) are appointed by the Norwegian government. Eight members of the board represent different public organisations. The main tasks of the Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board is to evaluate the social and ethical consequences of modern biotechnology and to discuss usage which promotes sustainable development. All members have working experiences and/or education to be competent to discuss questions regarding modern biotechnology. The Board has approximately ten regular meetings and organises two to three public conferences annually.

Bioethics Commission/ Bioethikkommission
At the year 2001 a Bioethics Commission (Bioethikkommission, Vienna) was established at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna. This commission advises the Federal Chancellor from an ethical point of view on all social, natural scientific and legal issues arising from the scientific developments in human medicine and human biology. This includes the submission of recommendations for practical use and suggestions for enacting the necessary legal provisions and the preparation of expert opinions on specific issues. The Commission exercises its advisory function independently.

32. Nordic Committee on Bioethics (Scandinavia)/ Nordisk kommitté för bioetik
The Nordic Committee on Bioethics (Nordisk kommitté för bioetik, Helsink, Finland) stress a Nordic international approach. The Committee is founded in 1989 to promote Nordic cooperation and exchange of information between scientists, parliamentarians, opinion leaders and public officials in the area of bioethics. In the increasing international variety of approaches taken to address bioethical questions, it is important to have a committee that reflects the Nordic dimension in responding to ethical issues raised by biosciences and biotechnology. The Nordic Committee on Bioethics has two members from each Nordic country.

The UK Nuffield Council on Bioethics (London) is an independent body that with a critical view conditions arranges for discussions and examination on ethical issues in (new technology in) biology and medicine. When needed the Council will formulate new guidelines and publish about results of their activities.

Human Genetics Commission (HGC)
The UK Human Genetics Commission (HCG, London) is the UK Government’s advisory body since 1999 on new developments in human genetics and their impact on individual lives. HCG advices the Government on human genetics with a particular focus on the social, ethical and legal issues. One of the key roles is to promote debate and to listen to what the public and stakeholders have to say. Human Genetics Commission is very committed to openness and transparency. From 1 January 2009 HCG has adopted the ‘Information Commissioner’s Model Publication Scheme’ for public authorities (a download is possible on the website of HCG).

National Medical Ethics Committee (NMEC/ KME – Komsija Republike Slovenije za Medicinsko Etiko, Ljubljana) is an independent authorized body. The Committee, also known as ‘Državna komisija za medicinsko etiko’ reviews proposals for biomedical research on human beings for their ethical acceptability. It also deals with other issues in the field of ethics and bioethics, either on the initiative of the Government, the Ministries, public agencies, public services and individuals or on its own initiative. In this work NMEC is guided by (inter)national documents, guidelines, declarations and conventions. The 15 members with a various professional background have their mandate by the Ministerial of Order.
