Board for Gene Technology/ Geenitekniikan lautakunta

The Finish Board for Gene Technology (Geenitekniikan lautakunta, Helsinki) is – in conjunction with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health – the authority in Finland regarding the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s).

This in the context of the Gene Technology Act that regulates the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms, plants and animals. Example given every operator using GMO’s has certain duties: he must make in writing a risk assessment of the use of each GMO in advance and be careful when using them, has a duty to obtain information on the properties of the GMO’s and he has to keep a record of the contained use. The Board for Gene Technology leads and coordinates the supervision done by authorities for welfare and health, and food safety.
